Ernest Drake for Psychorizon – read the whole story here

Contemporary music must be authentic and exciting, otherwise it’s totally irrelevant to me.  Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats prove so much of it, that a single song of this band weighs more than 80% of all records jamming in this very genre.

Hardly anyone seems to know, who is hiding behind this pseudonym. I make no exception whatsoever. But one thing is sure to me – the (very limited and thus) hardly available album „Blood Lust“ is part of more best-of-lists than actual records have been sold or even pressed. And this being the one Underground-Hype I agree with.
With an ironizing Splatter/Gore/Slasher-Image (at leat one murder per song to put it this way), this uncle with his strikingly-sick Falsetto is singing his way through a reign of nine tracks, lacking any loss of quality.
Somewhere between Stoner-Doom and true vintage Psychedelic Hard Rock, with a slight touch of blood…err, 60s Pop/Beat all the way to Garage (Kinks, Beatles, The Music Machine), a very abstract bit of Soundtrack atmosphere, Goblin made for Argento plus a fair bit NWOBHM-moment (Angel Witch and early Maiden) and Trouble.

The guitar-soli (that sound not much like they were done by a newcomer) truly remind me of  Adrian Smith and Dave Murray from 1982 to 84, slightly of one certain Iommi and even a bit of Bruce Franklin. They’re most likely to be free of the 70s-vintage feeling, since they are much faster than one used to play back in the days.

The Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats-motto could be like this: Lock in a witty but insane witch with a few vcr- or even betamax-horrormovies and a guitar and a handful of vinyl-records (among those none produced after 1982) and a recorder and tell her that you won’t unlock her before she’s got an album ready.
Mission successful! It’s simply one of the best releases of the whole genre, which after Electric Wizards’ “Witchcult Today” hardly made me cheer at all…
Songs like „Over And Over Again“, „I’ll Cut You Down“, „Death’s Door“, “13 Candles”, “Ritual Knife” and “I’m Here To Kill You” seem to flow into one another like oil, yet sticking to the mind. Nevertheless, the time span until you might possibly feel annoyed from it, is admirably high. “Curse In The Trees” is still the hard-edged and least catchy tune on the album, nonetheless still top league. “Down To The Fire” is the bonus track, which (appropriately enough) follows with a little distance to the previous song – it’s not really Acidfolk (perhaps one might not have taken on the Western guitar with steel strings), more likely the unplugged Uncle; more unlikely than the remaining 8 pieces but also a good number.

The phrase “all of a piece” applies to the analogue and quite dirty production (tape saturation, by far into the red continuous levels when recording, and a little demo and homerecoding-feel on exactly the right level for my taste) and also on the consistency of songwriting and arrangement.
Despite recurring structures and a clearly identifiable style, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats are not on self-plagiarism course. Song parts flow together in one’s mind basically like one single track, without having to be completely interchangeable. A feeling one might have had after listing to “The Number Of The Beast” the first few times in 1982.

I hardly listen to any new release more often than 3 times, but if it’s in steady rotation it’s gotta be something really huge. And “Blood Lust” for me was the best album release in 2011. Full stop.
