With the current year coming close to its end and most bands wrapping up their onstage activities, it’s time to take a look into the future and things to come in 2020. With only one concert I’ve missed out in 2019 due to some health issues and an emotional crisis, I could’t be more excited to get out a litte more again. And as much as I’m still bummed for not being able to actually see Cher live in Cologne, I got some more arena shows to enjoy in December and yes, I AM talking about finally catching up with the Kelly Family. And once again I will try and see Lucifer as well, as they will hit the road The Third Commantment tour throughout the month of may.

Another Swedish band about to get back out in the open is Blues Pills who are working on a new album right now. Be sure to check them out at a festival near you like Tons Of Rock alongside Deep Purple or the German double trouble that is Hurricane Festival and Southside Festival. Guess there will be more dates announced sometime soon. As for festivals, next year will be seeing some of the biggest names from the nineties, like The Offspring and oh yeah, Faith No More. Not to mention the most amazing package of Green Day and Weezer, who sold out way to fast for me. And then there is the reunion of Rage Against The Machine that really needs a decent run of European dates, Let’s see if that will happen. Also US punk legends Bad Religion will celebrate 40 years of raising their voices on the road in Spain and Portugal. And last but certainly not least, the Prince Of Fuckin’ Darkness himself Ozzy Osbourne will be joined by special guests Judas Priest for the second part of his rescheduled No More Tours tour. Check out all German and Austrian dates below.

11.11.20 Dortmund – Westfalenhalle
16.11.20 AT-Wien – Stadthalle
24.11.20 CH-Zürich – Hallenstadion
26.11.20 München – Olympiahalle
28.11.20 Mannheim – SAP Arena
30.11.20 Berlin – Mercedes-Benz-Arena

ROCK HARD FESTIVAL 2018 – Rocking A Personal Reminiscence

Blues Pills’ Elin in 2014 – On Sunday Morning

One morning in June some twenty years ago, I was…15 and this is a totally different story. It was the end of May actually some 14 years ago when it all started, my personal Rock Hard history. After the very first and supposed one-off event, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Rock Hard Megazine, the second coming came and would be my initial visit to what became an institution not just among the international Metal madness, but in my life as well. It was the third festival I would ever visit, back then at the tender age of 21 – back in the days we didn’t have fucking facebook to keep up with what’s going on. Getting to know new people demanded to go to places and meet in person – it was a wild time and I loved it! The first two times as a more or less regular visitor and some time in between, attending Rock am Rind in 2006, being your typical broke student and a sick interlude, 2009 I finally had turned into one of those annoying media folks, attending RHF for ten consecutive years!

Blues Pills in 2017 – Friday Headliner Bliss

It was that very year, 2009, that I immortalized myself as part of the Rock Hard history, performing on the main stage as a winner of the karaoke contest that took place the first few festival editions. And I hadn’t had it any other way than screaming my lungs out with the Judas Priest classic “Painkiller” – not to mention I would have needed some painkillers afterwards to sooth my sore throat from performing in front of a 6000 plus audience, let alone at an open air event! What a time to be alive. Just like the magazine, the festival itself has always been dedicated to a wide range of genres and as a support of the underground. We saw bands working their way up from tiny club shows to entering the charts on the pole position. Yes, this is the story of Blues Pills – a band I’ve always loved and that will have a special place in my heart forever and ever. I will spear your all the personal anecdotes for now.

Sodom in 2018 – Hairy Headliner For A Friday Night

Within the course of 14 years I had some of the best times ever, crowd surfing while Children Of Bodom played, banning my head hard for Amon Amarth and having my boobs signed by the Swedish sons of Ozzy Osbourne, Hellfueled, all in 2005. After a short absence in 2006, I also caught up with Bolt Thrower at their second time at RHF in 2012. And who could forget King Diamond‘s theatrical act in 2013, still gives me chills. But most memorable for me will be The Devil’s Blood, headlining in 2010, since no one wanted the stage after their blood-ridden ritual. Besides all these great bands, Rock Hard has always been a festival for families and friends and it really is and has been for me. Some folks I would just see once a year during the pentecoast weekend.

Partner in Crime & BFF – Queen Of Spades at RHF 2018

You’ve come a long way within the past 15 years, dear Rock Hard Festival and for the past ten years I couldn’t even imagine being anywhere else around this time of year, but now I feel that it’s time to move on. So much has changed and not all of it for the better. But I will always treasure my memories, specially of spending time with some of my best friends at the annual festivities. Most of all teaming up with my friend Susan at Queen Of Spades Photography in 2015 after the untimely demise of Jörg Litges, my former partner in crime of two years. And 2018 will always be a very special one to look back at as my former band mate Sonja joined in the fierce fun and my bestie Yorck made his debut as a real Rockstar and latest addition to Thrash legend Sodom. It might have been the last time for me for now, but it was one heck of a ride! Thanks.

ROCK HARD FESTIVAL 2018 – Full Circle Celebration

2018 marks a special year for me and thus for Psychorizon as I am celebrating ten consecutive years as one of those cheap folks that hang around the VIP area, hardly ever watch all the bands and get a hotel room to stay at – or in my case sleep at home instead of enjoying the annual campout offered by any festival. And yes, it’s the enemy, the Rock’n’Roll writer, some might even call them members of the press. Back in 2009 I took part in the karaoke and ended up performing Judas Priest’s Painkiller in front of over 6000 people. 2010 I met former Sodom guitarist Andy Brings when none other than the Metal Queen Doro had her birthday party at Helvete Metal Club. 2011 we celebrated with Andy at RHF and of course it was a total blast. But nothing could compare to last years’ bday-bash, which saw me and my partner in crime Queen Of Spades Photography on the first ever DCS-Cruise. Currently Andy is working on his first ever rockumentary “Full Circle – Last Exit Rock’n’Roll“- and just in time for my personal party, it just so happened that my best friend and occasional writer for Psychorizon – Yorck Segatz – is on of the new guys in Sodom, being in the same spot our former neighbour Mr. Brings was way back in the days with the first ever Thrash Metal record I would listen to “Get What You Deserve” from 1994. I guess we all get what we deserve sooner or later and everything really ends up as a full circle. Hence I couldn’t be any more exited to see the first Sodom show with the new line up at Rock Hard Festival! Need I say more?

Sodom 2018 – picture courtesy of Monsterpics Fotografien

Yes, of course I need to say more. But enough of the personal flabbergasting. Although it was the nicest coincidence that the Running Order for this years’ event was published yesterday which just so happens to be Yorck’s birthday!

Without further ado here it is now.

See you in there, rain or shine! Celebrating the full circle!

Jus & Liz…and they call it puffy love!

Hailing from the coastal Southwest of the United Kingdom, Electric Wizard have consistently redefined the preconceived thresholds of a detuned guitar chord with their peerless doom metal achievements. Formed by vocalist/guitarist Justin Oborn (previously with Lords of Putrefaction), bassist Tim Bagshaw, and drummer Mark Greening, and initially known as Thy Grief Eternal (briefer still, simply Eternal), the band made their debut with 1993’s; “Demon Lung” single – a split release with Our Haunted Kingdom (who later evolved into Orange Goblin). Released by Lee Dorrian’s very own Rise Above Records, the single paved the way for Electric Wizard’s eponymous first full-length a year later. Almost a quarter of a century later, Electric Wizard has seen numerous lineup changes and released seven more studio albums, the most recent, “Time To Die”, in September of 2014.

Please insert name of band, album & song here!

Kicking off today, Electric Wizard will return to European soil and “there is a constant Electric Wizard line-up. Me and Liz, ” to quote the master himself and just to clarify this upfront. Joining in the Dorset Doomsters for all dates except for the Stockholm show tonight, will be fellow legends Angel Witch. Formed, originally under the name of Lucifer, and was initially composed of guitarist and vocalist Kevin Heybourne, guitarist Rob Downing, drummer Steve Jones, and bassist Barry Clements. The band has regrouped and split up several times and has been going strong ever since getting back together at the dawn of the 2000s. Besides fronter Heybourne, the current incarnation features sticksman Andrew Prestidge and lowrider Will Palmer. With their self-titled debut, Angel Witch is considered as one of the most important bands from the NWOBHM-era. After missing their performance at the “Hunting Across Europe” tour in 2013, I will finally be catching up with them twice this month!

WASTED ILLUSION – Popping Hippie Creations For Rob Halford

Back in the early 90s, when I started buying band merch, it was a time you would not find girly shirts with the banner of your favourites…anyway, as the little bad-assed Riot Grrrl I was back then, it was ok to run around in an army blouse with the full back showing the crossed out cross of Canadian Punk Rock veterans BAD RELIGION. Combined with whatever black shirt I would find in my closet, some cut-off army pants and OF COURSE DocMartens Boots – oh heck, it was cool when I was 12, attending my first cool live show, hating High School and giving my mother sleepless nights as I could just not be her pretty little princess.

Well the days have changed and THANK SATAN, more and more bands have a nice selection for us Rock Ladies to add to our wardrobe. But if you don’t want to look like every second of them, you will have to go even further: Running scissors and needle trough the lines OR get some help from WASTED ILLUSION!

Emelie BergThe Lady with the not quite so wasted illusions: Emelie Berg

Emelie, you are the head of WASTED ILLUSION – could you tell us how and when the idea for making this kind of fashion came about?

It all started a few years ago when I just was modifying band shirts and then I wanted that special perfect vest so bad, you couldn’t find it anywhere. So I made a few. Never got that perfect one though, so I’m still making them! And now everybody else also wants my stuff! Couldn’t imagine that 4 years ago, when I only had my grandmas oldoldold Husqvarna sewing machine on a little table in the corner in my kitchen, in that small apartment I had back then. Today, things are a lot different.

Do you still have another job or can you make a living from designing already?

I can only work with something I love and adore, otherwise I will bang my head through the wall in agony and pain and it feels like I’m gonna die. For real!

I have survived on making cloths on my own for the last year. Some months was hard as hell and some was great. I’m so blessed that I have a husband-to-be by my side that supports everything I do and pushes me forward.

Now when I just launched the Facebook site for my brand, things kinda exploded. Now I really have stuff to do nonstop and it is so much fun! I’m so glad a friend of mine is helping me with all the pictures and all the technical stuff so I just put my time on sewing and answering mails and comments.

You are shipping worldwide, how far was the furthest delivery sent to by now?

I have a package by my side that I’m going to go and post at the post office after I’ve finished this. Its going all the way over the Atlantic to Santiago, Chile. Thats amazing!

I also have a pair of custom pants going to England next week.

If I would order some costume made item, let’s say a fringe vest (hahaha, just totally LUV those), how long will this take approximately?

Fringes is truly amazing! And on vest!! Ahh, Its amazing!!

At this moment I have about a 4 weeks waiting period. If you not live in Chile though. Then only the time for shipping will take about 10-15 days.

But if the customer have a special day coming up and really really badly want an item within days. I can fit it in my schedule to fit my customers need.

Like the amazing guitarist Filippa from Thundermother needed a dress for “Bandit Rock Awards” last week. She emailed me 3 hours before the package needed to be at the post-office. A sewed like a mad-woman and got the item ready in just under one hour! I can tell you I was sweating!

Whitesnake DressDressed For Success the Rock’n’Roll Way

For the customized things, what information do you need, if someone isn’t able to come over for taking measurement?

Then I need them to take their own measurements, everybody can do it. I always tell them how and where to measure.

I’m pretty picky and often take lots of measurements when my customer can come over. But the most important is to know their body type and how they want it to fit. One pair of pants can fit me perfectly, I’m a size small, but somebody else who also fits in a size small may need a whole different model to fit them just as well. Thats the fun part, and the hard part.

Where do you take your inspiration from for the items you have “in stock”?

Most of the time something just popp up in my head and I need to create it. And while doing that item, it says when needed more details or less. So I never know what its gonna be when I start. I know when its finished though. I don’t think when I create, I just do. That flow of creative glow is making me high. I never want to stop!

Apart from that, inspiration comes first from my customers. From todays fashion and hippie and motorcycle styles.

Is there a certain price range of the things you offer or is the sky the limit?

It all depends on the customer and how much detailing they want. In the details is the fun, I have a chance to give the most of me and create something rat. But more detailing also means it will be more expensive. But it is truly worth it! My customer is my boss, so if they want anything for 50 euro or 500 euro. I’ll make it for them.

Fringe BagAll-in for your Style: All in the bag!

Besides clothing, are there also accessories to be found at WASTED ILLUSION?

Yes, I have made a few purses, bags, hats, bracelets and I have a few new ideas that will coming up soon. I can tell that I and another designer-artist is gonna do something great together. Stay tuned all hippies out there!

You can check out Hessam from DAMIEN to see a rat bracelet/armband-thingy I made him last year.

How did you come up with the name WASTED ILLUSION?

I thought for a looong long time about what to name my brand. My hubby said I should have something with “Wasted” because I used to be wasted all the time. Now a days I don’t drink at all, all I want is to create. And it kinda fits with the hole rock n’ roll style. Illusion comes from a song named “Lethal Illusion” by my favorite swedish Heavy Metal band 220 VOLT and it kinda represent how I see on life in general.

Let’s take a trip back in time: Do you still remember the first piece of band clothing you bought and what was the most current one you purchased?

I will never forget the first one, or, the two first I bought with my own money. It was at the alternative shop SHOCK in Gothenburg. They had a sale on band tees. I saw two JUDAS PRIEST shirts that I fell in love with, but the only problem was it was kids size.. There it all began!

As far as live shows are concerned, as a fan and designer you are both, what is more important to you: Music or a real entertainment that might cause some crooked tones?

I love real music by real people. I can’t stand the overproduced albums and the perfect shows. Nothing is perfect! So don’t try to hide it with “a brush”. I like when you can tell when it isn’t perfect, the part of the thing of being human stands out in the mass just there. And when people don’t hide their flaws. I like it rough, small stages, when the strings on the guitar breaks in the middle of a song and the musician needs to make the best they can to entertain us with what they got.

Talking about music: What band got you into Rock/Metal and do you have favourite one?

I grew up with music like GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, LED ZEPPELIN, SPARKS, JERUSALEM, SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, BEATLES and swedish folk like FRED ÅKERSTRÖM and LISA EKDAL. And when I found JUDAS PRIEST when I was around 15 or 16, I found an inner fire in me that stands strong til this day. JUDAS PRIEST gave me lots of amazing bands and a GREAT deal of inspiration. There stage gear is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. That girl is my all time favorite designer!

Right now I have a period of only listening to old swedish Metal/Rock bands. Like 220 VOLT, NOVEMBER, HEAVY LOAD, GOTHAM CITY, SILVERMOUNTAIN, JERUSALEM, TORCH on vinyl, always on vinyl!

Fringe VestFringe Frenzy: WASTED ILLUSION got it all!

Apart from Facebook, where and how can people get in touch with you?

I’m about getting my own homepage with the e-mailadress info@wastedillusion.se but until then, e-mail me on Facebook or at my personal mail: emelie@fam-berg.net

What is going on at WASTED ILLUSION at the moment, specially after launching on Facebook?

Working my ass off! haha, Facebook and internet is truly amazing with this stuff. To reach so many amazing people all over the world. I’m so thankful to live in this time.

I have a thing going on that I told you about earlier, that is gonna be really awesome and I am so exited!

Thanks for this Interview, I hope that there will be some custom-made stuff with Psychorizon on it!

Thank you! This was so much fun!

We will make the rattest thing ever for Psychorizon! I have a few ideas already!

ROCK GODDESS – Heavy Metal Rock’n’Roll

As much as previous generations of musicians are an inspiration to current young bands, this has been the case at a time where many of todays’ Rockers haven’t even been born yet. When in the late 70s a British girl by the name of Jody Turner took her admiration of the very successful The Runaways, it took but a day to start a band of her own, recruiting her sister Julie as member number two. This was the Birth of Rock Goddess.

RockGoddess1As another addition school friend Tracey Lamb joined in on bass guitar, Donnica Colman on keyboards and Jackie Apperley on rhythm guitar to complete the first line-up. The girls rehearsed intensively and, through a friend, managed to place a track on a sampler album, which circulated in the London music underground. Meanwhile, John Turner, Jody and Julie’s father, who ran a record store and was managing the band used his connections to get the band their first gigs. Finally, after the production of a four tracks demo tape and an appearance at the Reading Festival in 1982, the band obtained a record deal with A&M.

RockGoddess6However, after the release of the album, Julie’s finally allowed to go on tour and the band tours as support act of Def Leppard. Another black page in their history is the departure of Tracey Lamb. But before Tracey quits the band, they decide to hire a fourth member to fill up the sound a bit. Her name’s Kat Burbella and she’s the second guitar player. After the tour with Def Leppard, Rock Goddess gets the chance to do a tour with Fastaway. Tracey decides to stay until the tour is over, but the Turner sisters have to find a replacement soon, because they’re planning a second album. However, Tracey Lamb doesn’t disappear from the scene long. Her departure was forced due to musical differences, so the story goes. Colman’s substitute Tracey Lamb (along with second guitarist Kat Burbella, with whom she formed the band She) finally leaves the band on ending up on the Girlschool roster.

RockGoddess8The band shows up with ‘stand in’ bassplayer Kelly Johnson of Girlschool during a German TV appearance. In ’83 tho’, Rock Goddess present Dee O’Malley as Tracy’s replacement. It’s also Dee, who handles the bass on their second album, called ‘Hell Hath No Fury’, produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest). The LP was released with two different covers. One with a band photo and another one with a drawing on the cover sleeve. Also the songs are slightly different. ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ and the Gary Glitter cover ‘I Didn’t Know I Loved You Till I Saw You Rock And Roll’ are on the American version, whereas on the European pressing (with the drawing) these songs are being replaced by ‘No More’ and ‘Seen It All Before’. The Gary Glitter cover is the first single taken off the album c/w ‘Hell Hath No Fury’.

RockGoddess9The promotional tour for ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ brings the girls on the road along side Y&T and IRON MAIDEN. The same year, Jody Turner is to be heard as a background vocalist on the Tank LP ‘This Means War’, together with Mick Tukker (White Spirit) and Denise Dufort (Girlschool). In ’84 and ’85, they recorded some songs; first with Chris Tsangarides (who also played keyboards on ‘Hell Hath No Fury’) and next with Paul Samson. Unfortunately, none of these recordings have ever been released on vinyl. In France however, the band is still very popular and they support Spider and Saxon in ’84. Dark clouds pack together for the Turner sisters in ’86. Their deal with A&M expires. Also, bass player Dee O’Malley gets pregnant and she leaves the band to become a full-time mother. Then in ’87, the French label JID brings out the ’85 sessions the band did with Paul Samson. The album’s called ‘Young And Free’ and it’s released in France only. The only single from the album, ‘Love Has Passed Me By’ c/w ‘Just In’ was already released in ’86. It shows us a very commercial sounding Rock Goddess.

RockGoddess7As die-hard fans grave to own the album, it is but a glimpse of a once successful band. With the release of ‘Young And Free’, Rock Goddess support Samurai in the UK, but they get almost yelled away for the commercial songs they’re playing from their new album. After the departure of Dee O’Malley, the band finds a new bassplayer in Julia Longman (ex-PDQ) and keyboard player Becky Axten is added to the band as well. After a tour of nearly half a year, in the fall of ’87, the story of Rock Goddess ends abruptly, when the band gets disbanded.

RockGoddess4RockGoddess2In ’88, Jody Turner returns with sister Julie under the name of The Jody Tunrer Band. However, this time it’s not an all-female outfit. The band is completed with Phil Manley-Reeve on bass and Ex-Mammoth bassplayer Gavin Taylor. Live, they play songs like ‘Kiss Yourself Goodbye’, ‘The Game Is Up’, ‘I’m No Angel’ and ‘The Blonde Is Dead’ (a tribute to Marylin Monroe) and the only Rock Goddess song, ‘Will You Take Me Home Tonight?’. They change their name into Turner, but the band disappears very quickly. Until somewhere in ’94, when we see Rock Goddess in a comeback line-up. Of course Jody Turner sings and plays guitar, but Julie is the missing link. The band is completed by Aki Shibahara (bass), Nicola Shaw (drums; formerly Sisterhood) and Izabella Fronzoni (guitar; formerly Ice Age). The last thing, we can track down, is this line-up changed their name in ’95 into Braindance (UK). After a name change, the group disbanded again in 1995, after playing their last gig at the Thomas O’Becket public house. They reformed in 2009 to play the Hard Rock Hell music festival in Prestatyn, Wales, but split before they had a chance to perform.
