KING WOMAN – Unveil Video For ‘Deny’ & Announce US+EU Tourdates

After previously announcing the release of their full-length debut record “Created In The Image Of Suffering”, San Francisco-based King Woman have now unveiled a first music video in advance.  Directed by Kevin Haus, the video for “Deny” was brought to life by Consequence of Sound.

Vocalist and lyricist Kristina Esfandiari comments: “With this video we aimed to paint a picture of how tormenting and exhausting it is to wrestle with your true self.” Religion plays a strong theme in the music of King Woman, but not in the “praise God, glory be to Him” sort of way. Naming their forthcoming output “Created In The Image Of Suffering” was more than just a clever turn of phrase for the Bay Area Doom Metal outfit. The record is a “catharsis for years of religious and mental torment,” as a press statement puts it, a release you can certainly feel in the album’s new single “Deny”. The song itself finds bandleader Kristina Esfandiari bewailing the facade forced on her by religion in her uniquely hazy drone. “I pray my mother/ Won’t you ever find a cure?” Esfandiari asks on the chorus. “Throw back odd pill/ Find euphoria I once knew.” Musically, “Deny” is a perfect exemplification of how Consequence of Sound’s own Andy O’Connor described the band’s sound in his 10 Most Anticipated Metal Albums of 2017 feature: “Doomy enough for those who still wish High on Fire were on the label, yet weird enough for people who only know Relapse through S U R V I V E…”

king-womanAs for the track’s video, which you can watch above, director Kevin Haus captured the song’s ethos with frightening vividness. Esfandiari describes it as revealing “the shadow aspect in Jungian psychology,” unlocking the darkness kept locked away in one’s subconscious. “In the video you see this portion of the mind surfacing and coaxing the preacher into his truest form; drawing out the aspects of himself which he loathes because it doesn’t fit in with his beliefs,” she tells Consequence of Sound. “In church, I saw others being raised with a rod in their backs, trying to fight their own carnality — buried in shame and guilt. The belief was to deny anything inside of themselves that was considered ugly or wrong, and instead attain a pristine image.”

Additionally the band will be touring the US and Europe alongside Oathbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe and True Widow throughout February, March and April.

Led by the gaspy howls of charismatic vocalist Kristina Esfandiari, San Francisco’s King Woman unveil their debut full-length “Created In The Image of Suffering”, a profoundly crafted opus of brooding, ethereal doom-rock. With the hypnotic and breathy vocal dramatics of Kristina Esfandiari, King Woman harness the elastic textures and temporality of drone and metallic shoegaze alongside the transcendental, melancholic power of doom. Recorded with engineer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Wreck & Reference, Oathbreaker) at the Atomic Garden, “Created In The Image of Suffering”‘s seven compositions evoke rich, gloomy imagery with crumbling washes of blurred, billowing distortion densely layered atop hazy, psychedelic atmospheres that call to mind a surrealistic Black Sabbath fronted by Mazzy Star. Complete with deeply personal, introspective lyrics that serve as catharsis for years of religious and mental torment, King Woman truly suffer to create their art.

Kristina Esfandiari originally formed King Woman back in 2009, but the band had taken a backseat to her other projects at the time like Miserable and Whirr (with whom she played with from 2012 to 2013), where she found her confidence from a vigorous touring schedule of playing stage shows, floor shows, and everything in between. “Created In The Image of Suffering” is due out on February 24, 2017 via Relapse Records. The single “Utopia” is out now.

MYRKUR – Announces New Live EP ‘Mausoleum,’ Shares “Jeg er guden, I er tjenerne”

On the one year anniversary of her critically-acclaimed, masterful debut full-length, M, Danish black metal artist Myrkur unveils a captivating live recording from the historic Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway. Aptly titled Mausoleum, the album features beautifully dramatic & stripped-down acoustic reinventions of seven songs from M plus one brand new song and a Bathory cover; all accompanied by the Norwegian Girls Choir and Håvard (ex-Ulver) on guitar. Captured in a cold, dimly-lit tomb covered in morbid frescos that depict the circle of human life from conception til death, Mausoleum is an incredible showcase of Myrkur’s sublime yet haunting voice in a truly chilling, unrivaled atmosphere.

Mausoleum is due out this August 19 on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse.

From the darkness of Scandinavia emerges Myrkur. Hailing from Denmark, the one-woman project signed to renowned independent label Relapse Records in 2014 off the strength of just one EP, its eponymous debut (released September 2014). Envisioned and realized by classically-trained multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Amalie Bruun, Myrkur combined the rawness of second-wave black metal bands like Ulver and Darkthrone with a natural, ethereal sonic beauty. Myrkur introduced a wholly unique perspective on the genre of black metal––one that immediately put her on the map and caught the attention of listeners and publications worldwide.

Though the word “myrkur” means “darkness” in Icelandic, Bruun’s music is far from monochromatic. With its distinct sense of Nordic isolation, Myrkur’s compositions are at once brutal and delicate. Choral and folk elements abound, lending the music a mystical, legendary quality and an untouchable equilibrium between dark and light. Myrkur’s influences range from nature to traditional Scandinavian folklore to Norse mythology and far beyond. Bruun elaborates, “I always dreamed about becoming a Huldra, an Elver girl, a Valkyrie, the goddess Freja. These powerful women in Norse Mythology have an element of beauty and mystique, but they are also deadly.”

That power was more than evident on Myrkur’s debut EP, but fully came into its own on Bruun’s first full-length, M, released by Relapse in August 2015. Featuring production and guest appearances from renowned metal legends such as Krystoffer “Garm” Rygg (Ulver), Teloch (Mayhem/Nidingr) and Christopher Amott (Arch Enemy), M showcases Bruun’s learned and mature perspective on black metal alongside her prodigious compositional and vocal talents. In its 8/10 review, Decibel Magazine characterized M as “a black metal record that respects tradition without drowning in it.” Publications including NPR, Stereogum, Pitchfork, Spin and dozens of other outlets worldwide have shared this sentiment, hailing M and Myrkur as the very thing they stand for – not a drastic reinvention, not an atavistic homage, but a unique, timeless, and true expression of black metal. With two acclaimed releases, US and EU tours with Behemoth and Deafheaven, and a number of worldwide festival appearances under her belt, Myrkur is ready to help her homeland reclaim its role as a global leader in extreme music.

German extreme metallers Downfall of Gaia have just announced a round of live dates for the summer! They will be joined by Australian Hope Drone! This tour marks the first tour for new guitar player Marco Mazzola.
It is always tough to replace a member of a band, particularly someone who has been with us for so many years, but Marco convinced us in every way! No big words needed for this – We are looking forward to the next chapter of Downfall of Gaia and leave the last words to Marco!

Marco: “We met in Italy, back in 2012, while I was touring with my band Caino and we opened a couple of gigs for Downfall Of Gaia. Me and Dominik stayed in contact during the following years and I immediately wrote him once I saw the announcement that the band was looking for a new guitarist. I always held Downfall Of Gaia in high regard, and I’m now honored to take part of it. I’ll do my best to keep alive what they previously built with Peter.”

Got to know these amazing guys in late 2015 while touring together through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
